Friction Backs - the most common back in the jewelry industry. As long as the back fits the post tightly and clicks past the notch on the post this backing should be nice and secure. However, if you sleep in your earrings and find yourself loosening the back for extra comfort you might wake up with an earring in your covers.

Average cost - $125 with medium 14k backs (includes rhodium plating)

Screw Backs - The post is threaded and the back has to be screwed off by hand in order to be removed. This style is very secure. The back will never come off the post without physically unscrewing it. It does take a few seconds to screw on and off.

Average cost - $150 with medium backs in 14k (includes rhodium plating)

Protektor Backs - The happy medium between screw backs and friction backs. Protektor backs work on a positive-locking clutch that grips the double notched post securely, until released. The dual-tab release allows quick and easy on and off by pinching the edges together.
