Project Self was created by 17 year old Taylor Baxter. Project Self educates elementary school students about disabilities. Project Self’s mission is to provide the tools necessary for students to understand, accept, and embrace students of unique abilities

When Taylor was in 4th grade she had a boy in her class who had Autism. Taylor did not understand why he acted differently from her other classmates. After she realized he has Autism, she wanted everyone to understand her classmate they way she did.  After learning a little more about Autism, Taylor with the help of her friend with Autism and her other close friend established a program that I named R.E.A.C.H. (Road to Embrace Autism with Care and Heart).  Taylor’s goal was to educate other young students about Autism in order to establish a better understanding of Autism. Unfortunately, as a ten-year-old, she  was not taken very seriously and the program did not gain the needed momentum to become successful.

Unfortunately, as a ten-year-old, she  was not taken very seriously and the program did not gain the needed momentum to become successful. Now that Taylor is in High School she still has seen no changes. Kids still do not understand people with disabilities. So she created a program called Project Self that educates elementary school students about all abilities.

If everyone had a better understanding of special needs children, the occurrence in bullying and other inappropriate behavior would diminish.  Children with Down Syndrome, Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, and other types of disabilities can and should be, treated with the same level of respect and dignity as other children. Project Self’s pilot curriculum will be implemented in the Lindbergh School District for the 2018-2019 school year. Taylor’s ultimate goal is to have Project Self’s curriculum across the United States.
